Announcing my Revise and (re)Submit January workshop!
Make your 2023 New Year's resolution to revise a manuscript and get it send out into the world - and let me help!
Hello everyone,
This January, I’m hosting an intensive revision workshop, and I’d love for you to join us. The details and registration info can be found here. Please forward this to friends and colleagues who might be interested in this workshop as well!
Start the year off right - get your manuscript revised, off your desk, and sent into the world!
Why: I decided to host this workshop because I talk to writers everyday who are stuck on revisions and don’t know how to make headway of them. I’ve also talked to writers all month who are generating lots of new words, but are worried about when they’ll have time to revise the first draft and submit it for publication.
This workshop is designed to help you learn about revision, create a revision plan, and get an article or chapter fully revised before the spring semester starts. Early January is one of those rare pockets of time where for many of us the kids are back in school and the semester hasn’t started - why not use the time to get a manuscript turned around?
What: A two-week, four-session intensive workshop designed to help you master the art of revision, create a revision plan, and get one of your manuscripts closer to submission.
Who’s it for: Junior and senior scholars and graduate students who are stuck at the revision phase with an article or book manuscript, or people who are just interested in learning how to think critically about revision.
What we will do: Meet four times in two weeks to discuss the major principles of revision. In the first workshop you’ll come up with a timeline and a plan for revising a manuscript, and then work on it step-by-step over the course of the two weeks. The goal is to get your manuscript in great shape and send it into the world before spring classes start!
Why me I work with scholars every day on successfully revising book manuscripts and proposals to top presses such as Oxford, Cambridge, and Chicago, and on successful revisions of manuscripts accepted for publications in journals including APSR, Journal of Politics, and Gender and Politics. This workshop will teach you the tools I use to revise manuscripts, and then help you apply those tools to your own work. If you want extra help, you can sign up add on a consultation session or manuscript review for half of what I charge normally for those services.

FAQs
Q: Do I need to have a piece to revise to attend?
A: Everyone is welcome, and it will be even more useful to you if you have at least a rough draft that you can work on during the workshop.
Q: What should I revise during the workshop?
A: If you have a conference paper that’s almost ready to go out the door, an R and R that’s been sitting on your desk, or a chapter of your book or dissertation that needs to be workshopped, that’s perfect. If you have a piece that just needs to be proofread, pick something in worse shape–you know you have a zombie manuscript somewhere on your hard drive! If you have a rough idea for a manuscript, you’re very welcome! You’ll get a lot out of the discussions of revision, and then have a set of guidelines to use in the revision process once you’re ready.
Q: I teach during that time/it’s the middle of the night in my time zone–will this still be worth it?
A: I think so! All of the sessions will be recorded and materials will be made available online, and you and I can touch base at any time. Obviously, nothing beats attending live, but you won’t miss much if you watch the sessions at a different time.
Q: I just want to come to one of the talks–can you give me the link?
A: Sure! If you just want to drop in, you can buy a single session pass—see details below.
Q: I’m interested in Tier 2 or 3 - when do I schedule the meeting and/or revision?
A: Whenever you’d like! It can be during or right after the workshop, or if the revisions take a little while that’s fine too. Revisions usually take me about two weeks to turn around, so you should factor that into your submission plans.
Q: Can I pay you from my university account instead of by credit card?
A: Yes—I can send you an invoice for registration, and your university can pay me. Shoot me an email and we can work out details.
Please help me spread the word by posting this on social media, forwarding it to your department, co-authors, and graduate students.
Thank you!! For those of you doing AcWriMo or NatNoWriMo, keep going - this month has 13 days left, and many of us in the US get to eat pie next week! We can totally make it.
Keep writing,
Kelly
