Epilogue Editing - Fall Writing Edition!
Hi everyone!
It’s been awhile since I’ve shown up in your mailboxes. But the kids (finally!) go back to school next week, leaves are just starting to change color here in Brooklyn, and now it’s time to figure out a good writing rhythm for the fall.
I feel like there are lots of metaphors for writing in this picture of my youngest at a recent Brooklyn Cyclones game. You have sports, you have roller coasters, you have people cheering you on from the stands - what’s not to love about kicking off writing season?
New Resources! I added a new post to the Five Minute Writing Tips Resource Library on my website. This one is about the most common question I get asked - how to know what kind of editor you need. It’s a complicated question, based on where you are in the writing process, what kind of accountability circles you have around you, and what skills you have or what kind of editing you like (or don’t like!) doing. And it comes with this handy printable that you can refer to as you move through the process. If you have a friend who might benefit from an editor, this is a great resource to send their way!
Productivity Tip: I noticed this year that there were certain things I need to work on each week that end up getting swept away by everyday life. In the fall, I’m reserving 115-12:45 as a core productivity time, and giving each day a designation (Monday planning/business, Tuesday reading, Wednesday/Thursday writing, Friday admin/professional development). I’m excited because I always end up doing logistical work when I’m supposed to be writing, and I never give myself time to read things I’m not editing during the workday, so I have a big ol’ stack of things I’m ready to read sitting next to my desk. I also need a dedicated time each week to do things like send invoices and figure out tax structures, or those things will never get done.
Upcoming Events!
Let’s Write Thursdays: This matters for YOU because I’m going to establish those Wednesday and Thursday sessions as group writing times. At 1115 am eastern, we can log in and say what we’re writing about, write for an hour and a half, and check in right before 1245. Come when you can, stay as long as you can, invite people who might benefit from it. You can use this link to add the writing session to your calendar, and use the Google Meet link embedded in order to join. If you want weekly email reminders, sign up here (but feel free to drop in without signing up!). (Note - I’ll be in Norway gazing at fjords on Sept 22 and 29, and with family for Thanksgiving on Nov 24, so there are no writing sessions then).
Let’s Write November – AcWriMo: Is it too early to be thinking about writing in November? Probably. But like I’ve done the past few years, I’ll be hosting AcWriMo this November. In a perfect world, my book project will be done by then and I’ll be searching for a new project, and AcWriMo is a great time to get a lot of (messy) words on paper. I’ll have more details in October, but now is a great time to pencil it in!
Finally, thank you for all of your referrals and sending all of your friends and colleagues my way - you all know some amazing people, and I’ve loved getting to know their work. I have some openings in my schedule for later in the fall - if you or someone you know will need an editor or consultant, let’s set up a time to talk!
Keep Writing,
Kelly
